I had a spare 1TB laptop drive sitting around and I decided to make it a portable external drive.
Designs done in CorelDRAW X7. Laser cut acrylic of various thickness and color.
The PCB was surprisingly difficult to find. I wanted a bare board powered by USB 3.0 alone. Had to have it shipped from Hong Kong.
The HDD is a 5400RPM 1TB nonsense that came with the HP laptop in the background there. I replaced it with a SSD and thus had a spare.
The top design is custom, the back is a galactic credit chip. I just wanted a star wars-y pattern. The side you can see the stacked construction with blue acrylic. The bottom right shows what the engraved plates look like directly from the laser cutter. They look a lot better when the dust is washed off
It's proper bolt-together and I'm considering some EL wire to edge light it if I can find a small enough transformer.
