Yeah, I can answer questions about animation. It's not my strongest skill in blender and most of the animations I've done are physics-related.

For physics-related stuff you set up the initial conditions and let the program simulate each frame. You still render frame-by-frame, but you allow the program to make each frame.

For instance with the blocks, I didn't have to move each block on each frame, the program simulated the interactions and recorded their location on each frame. For the smoke and liquid the program calculates the shape of the liquid at each frame.

It depends on the animation. Sometimes you have to go frame by frame

That said, are you not using keyframes?
